The legend of Honey Duchess Oolong began with the 921 earthquake in 1999. While tea farmers in Lugu were busy rebuilding their homes, tiny leafhoppers quietly feasted on the summer leaves. By the time the farmers returned, the leaves were covered in bite marks and sweet saliva, too late for traditional Dongding processing. Instead of discarding them, the farmers took a bold leap: they applied the high-oxidation techniques of Oriental Beauty and finished with the signature low-temperature roasting of Dongding. The result was breathtaking. The leaves turned a striking reddish-brown at the edges, the liquor glowed orange-amber, and the aroma exploded with intense honeyed lychee and dried longan. The taste was rich, full-bodied, and regal, far more opulent than the delicate Oriental Beauty. The farmers decided this tea deserved a name as luxurious as its flavour: Honey Duchess Oolong, inspired by Yang Guifei, the legendary beauty who adored lychees.
